OSCAR 2025 REVIEW

That’s a wrap on the 2025 film awards season, and what a way to finish! Anora led the way with five wins, while Sean Baker made history as the first person ever to win four Oscars in one night for a single film—and every single one was well deserved.

This is only my second post, but it won’t take long for you to realise just how much of an Anora and Sean Baker fan I am. To say I was rooting for them would be a major understatement. I’ve been leading my own personal campaign for Anora since before Cannes—back when it didn’t even have a title. Simply having Sean Baker’s name attached to a project is enough to make it my most anticipated film. I’m really excited to see what he does next—it’s a difficult task to follow such a successful film, but I have no doubt it will be something incredible.

The Brutalist rightfully performed well too, taking home awards for Best Actor, Cinematography, and Score—all of which were fully deserved. Honestly, it could have won more. A truly remarkable film.

And while we’ve known for months, it’s amazing to finally be able to say that Kieran Culkin is an Oscar winner! He was fantastic in A Real Pain, and this win is so well deserved for such a terrific actor.

Overall, this year’s Oscars were fantastic—they got almost everything right for once. My only real disagreements are with the Emilia Perez wins, but beyond than that, I’m happy. One of the best ceremonies in recent memory!

I didn’t do as well as I’d hoped this year with my predictions, ending up with 16/23. Three of those misses were shorts, which I don’t really count since they’re nearly impossible to predict perfectly. Now, let’s go over the other predictions I got wrong and break down what happened.

First up is Best Actress. This was arguably the tightest category of the night, so I don’t feel too bad about getting it wrong. What frustrates me most is that I had predicted Mikey Madison at every single precursor and had been rooting for her all the way, so I have no idea why I switched to Demi Moore at the last minute. That said, I’m not too disappointed—I’m just so happy Madison won the award.

Next up is Best International Feature. This was another tight category, and while I got it wrong, I’m not too disappointed as I was delighted with the outcome. I took a risk by betting against the slight favorite, thinking Emilia Perez’s other wins would give it the edge, but I was wrong—and I’m so glad I was. I’m Still Here is an incredible film, and I’m so happy it received at least some award recognition.

Best Animated Feature was incredibly tight category. I really thought The Wild Robot would take this one. I haven’t seen Flow yet, but the fact that it won an Oscar despite being made with a free software on a next-to-nothing budget is unbelievable. A very cool win and I can’t wait to watch it.

Anora winning Best Editing was one of the biggest shocks of the night—but a very welcome one. I was pretty confident that Conclave would win here, though I didn’t have much evidence to back it up. Still, I was thrilled to see Sean Baker take the award, and as soon as he did, I knew he was about to make history.
